Brand Film & Cinematography for Engineering Startup ProtoGT
I produced ProtoGT's brand film from concept to delivery, handling every aspect of production to create a video that put a genuine face to the engineering startup. The film was part of a broader strategy to humanise the brand and demonstrate the confidence and personality behind the technical expertise.
ProtoGT is a Sheffield-based engineering consultancy that builds custom prototypes engineered for long-term performance, working across embedded systems, automation, and manufacturing with a practical, project-driven approach.
Pre-Production and Planning
The directors were busy running the business, which meant I had one shoot day to capture everything. Pre-shoot day, I modelled the entire space in Blender. This let me estimate how natural sunlight would move through the room at different times of day and test camera positions virtually. By the time I arrived on set, I knew exactly where to place the camera and when to shoot each sequence.
I also created detailed storyboards that mapped out the entire narrative. The script focused on demonstrating the brand's confidence and the personality of the people behind ProtoGT. To me the main focus of the video was about showing who they are and why clients should trust them with their projects.
Post-Production and Assembly
Short-form video demands constant engagement. You can't let attention drift for even a second. I integrated multiple hooks throughout the edit, using After Effects to create motion graphics that reinforced key messages. Sound design played a massive role in pacing and emotional impact. But my favourite element was the whiteboard writing sequence, something I'd been conceptualising since the conversation started. I'm really happy with how the video turned out.
The Result
The video received numerous compliments from clients and industry contacts. More importantly, it drove tangible results: impressions increased by 200% with a 12% click-through rate. The film now anchors ProtoGT's social media presence and website, giving the brand the genuine, human face it needed to stand out in a technical industry.
